Tramadol 100mg is the common name for pain killer analgesic branded as Ultram, Ultram ER, Rybix ODT. This is prescribed to the patients suffering from regular moderate to severe pain after injury or major surgeries. Tramadol 100mg comes in the form of tablets and also extended release (ER) as tablets and capsules to be taken orally. The extended-release helps in treatment of pain round the clock. Tramadol 100mg is among narcotic analgesics which works on brain like morphine as it binds the brain receptors responsible for transmitting the feeling or sensation of pain in the body. Tramadol is usually considered safe and have FDA approval however like other narcotic pain killers, patients can get addicted to Tramadol if the drug is abused.
Usage and Dosage
Tramadol 100mg is prescribed to the patient to suffice chronic pain after injury or major surgery when the alternate analgesics are inadequate to manage the pain relief.
Prescribed dosage for immediate release Tramadol 100mg is 4-6 hours as per the critical pain treatment required. IT should be started with 25-50mg initially for 3 days with intense monitoring of the effects and then increased by 50-100mg per day to increase and improve tolerance. Maximum dosage prescribed should not increase 400mg per day.
Extended release tablet is prescribed 100mg daily and is increased after every 5 days by 100 mg. The daily dosage should not exceed 400 mg per day. While converting from immediate release to extended release tablets, it is recommended to close it to 100mg and then shift to extended release. Extended release tablet should be taken orally and not to be chewed or dissolved. If feeling vomiting after taking extended release the medicine should be taken with food.
Do’s and Don’ts
Tramadol 100 is strictly for adults (above 18 Years) and the dosage differs after the age of 70-75 years and should be taken as per doctor’s prescription. This is an opioid analgesic and should not be prescribed to pediatric (below 17 years) patients.
Tramadol 100mg has to be taken orally and to be swallowed as whole and not to be chewed, crushed and dissolved. I case of dosage missed it should be taken as soon as patient remembers however the dose should not be doubled in any case to catch up the schedule.
For the patients with history of Kidney problems only immediate release form of Tramadol 100mg should be prescribed and the ER form is never recommended as it may lead to withdrawal symptoms. Tramadol 100mg is not prescribed to the patients with history of Liver issues, seizure, mental illness, head injuries, Stomach ulcers.
